With 70% of its workforce expected to retire within the next 5—8 years, CONSOL Energy faced a new challenge—how to encourage a new generation of both white- and blue-collar workers to be interested in working for a large company that previously never needed to market itself and, therefore, had low name recognition. Besides that, its product was coal, a misunderstood source of everyday fuel. One component of a highly successful marketing communications campaign was a new website that used highly interactive digital effects to attract young online users and keep them engaged in the site while gaining information about the company and employment opportunities. Employment inquiries and visits to the corporate website increased dramatically once the recruitment-specific site was launched.
